She applied the final touch of make up to her
porcelain skin and stared back at herself.
She was glowing with pre wedding bliss. She could hardly wait to walk
down the aisle and see the man of her dreams standing, waiting with a bountiful
amount of love to offer her for the rest of their days together.
The
doorbell rang; she swung the door open and her bridal party stampeded in like a
herd of wild animals. Their chatter and laughs instantly filled the room that
was only minutes ago filled with just her thoughts alone. Her friends gawked
over how beautiful she looked while pulling at her like some sort of life sized
Barbie doll. “Enough, enough!” she shouted, “let’s get this party started!”
The
limo honked outside the house, three exaggerated beeps. They all screamed with
excitement and rushed to the door. “Whoa, whoa, whoa!” Britt the maid of honor quickly blurted out,
“Before we all leave and get ahead of ourselves, I do have one request. We must
all turn off and leave our cell phones here. This is a girl’s night. A night to
celebrate and cherish the engagement of Sarah. No distractions.” They all
agreed and piled their phones on top of one another on the coffee table.
Without hesitation after doing so, they all sprinted to the limo. The night had
begun.
The
next morning was fuzzy. Slowly awakening, they all groaned about how shitty
they felt. The night was a success however, each one of them satisfied with the
outcome of the party. Slowly making their way out of bed and into the kitchen,
they all talked and laughed over freshly brewed coffee and pancakes about the
previous night events. “Holy shit, our phones!” Sarah said. She ran to the
coffee table in the living room and quickly powered on her device. “Mark is
going to be livid that I forgot to call when I got in!” she stressed. Finally
the phone was up and running. 27 missed calls and 14 new voicemails. The
startling shock of such a site forced her knees to collapse and her gut to
sink. She entered her four digit
password put the phone up to her ear and listened through to the other end.
She
flung her face into her lap and let out the most heart wrenching sob. Her
friends quickly surrounded her and comforted her but didn’t know what for. Britt
took the phone and listened to the message Sarah had just received. The phone slipped from her hand and she too
dropped next to her friend, wrapping her arms tightly around her comforting her
like a child.
“Sarah
it’s your mother, where are you?! There has been an accident. Mark’s apartment
building caught on fire last night. He isn’t looking too good honey. He is in a
coma and the doctors aren’t sure if he’ll make it. Oh honey, please call me
when you get this, we’re all so worried. This isn’t how I wanted you to find
out this sort of news. Please when you get this message meet us all at the
hospital. Mark needs you by his side now more than ever.”
Wow, this was such a good story. It got you so excited they were having such a good time, and I loved the idea of leaving cell phones at home. However when she hears the voice mail it breaks your heart. Very sad but very engaging.
ReplyDeleteIt was weird reviewing your story and having it be so similar to mine.
